Neighbourhood Profile: Church and Wellesley
The draw of the Church and Wellesley neighbourhood can be seen when you walk down it’s vibrant streets lined with restaurants, patios, shops, and pubs that all combine to create a small village feel. Within its three city blocks, this village is home to thousands of residents and over 130 businesses ranging from trendy and unique and shops and services.
The Church and Wellesley area is also widely known as Canada’s largest gay village. While most people will refer to the area as “The Village” or “Church and Wellesley”, while the strong gay community has earned the area such nicknames as “the Gay Village” and “the Gaybourhood”.
Location
Located in the central corridor of downtown Toronto, the area of the Church and Wellesley village begins south at Gerrard street and extends north to Bloor between Yonge and Jarvis Streets.
Transportation
Due to it’s prime downtown location, getting around in the Church and Wellesley Neighbourhood is not a chore as you are in one of the major hubs of the city.

Community
Along with a wide variety of nice restaurants, a safe neighbourhood, and a great vibrant community, Church and Wellesley Village is widely known for it’s strong roots as Toronto’s original LGBT community. The immense pride this community takes in being gay friendly can be seen every summer when they play host to Pride week celebrations. Though it is regarded as the largest gay community in Canada, much of Toronto’s gay scene has been migrating southwest to the Queen West and Parkdale part of the downtown as more young families are starting to enter the scene.

Toronto Pride Week
In early July this community opens it’s doors for Pride Week and it’s flagship event the Pride Parade. The Toronto Pride Parade has a history of 35 years, and it continues to grow in scope and scale year over year. It is one of Toronto’s largest summer festivals as well as on the biggest Pride Parades in the world. The parade starts near Bloor and ends at Yonge and Dundas Square, with a street fair taking place just parallel on Church street.

Halloween on Church
Though it cannot hold a candle to the draw of the Toronto Pride Week, Halloween has become a very special day in this neighbourhood. Thousands come down to Church street on October 31st to celebrate what is becoming to be one of the largest Halloween parties in the continent.
